  • - According to the EnviStats India 2025 report, marine fish production rose from 34.43 lakh tonnes in the baseline period to 44.95 lakh tonnes in 2023–24, underscoring the sector’s upward trajectory and its growing contribution to national seafood supply.
  • - While marine capture fisheries have grown strongly, coastal aquaculture, especially shrimp farming, has driven export surges. Shrimp production alone climbed nearly 270% between 2013–14 and 2023–24, enhancing India’s seafood export figures.

  • (i) India’s extensive 8,118 km coastline and a 2.02 million sq km Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) hold an annual fisheries potential of 5.31 million metric tonnes. Thus, despite current achievements, there remains significant untapped potential in deep-sea and high-sea fishing to further boost marine output.
  • (ii) Central government support — particularly under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the Fisheries & Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) — has fueled infrastructure development, enabling the fisheries sector to rise from 95.79 lakh tonnes in 2013–14 to approximately 195 lakh tonnes in 2023–24. Marine fish production has also notably doubled over the last decade.
