In August 2025, Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Madhavrao (M.) Scindia officially announced the nationwide rollout of Advanced Postal Technology (APT) under India Post. This Rs.5,800 crore project is part of India’s Information Technology (IT) 2.0 program to modernize, digitalize, and enhance customer-centric postal services.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The IT 2.0 – APT program is a Rs.5,800 crore investment under the Ministry of Communications (MoC), designed to build upon Project IT 1.0 by enabling faster, smarter, and more efficient postal operations across India.
  • - The system has been developed indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT), operating under the Department of Posts (DoP), MoC. It reflects India’s growing emphasis on technological self-reliance in the postal sector.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) APT is hosted on the MeghRaj 2.0 cloud platform of the Government of India (GoI) and supported by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), ensuring secure, scalable, and reliable digital infrastructure for nationwide operations.
  • (ii) Key features of IT 2.0 include a single unified user interface, QR code–based payments, One Time Password (OTP)–enabled delivery, and a 10-digit alphanumeric Digital Postal Index Number (DIGINP) to enhance accuracy, security, and transparency in postal transactions.
  • (iii) The rollout of IT 2.0–APT is being executed in phases across 23 postal circles, beginning with a pilot in Karnataka (May–June 2025) and completed nationwide by August 4, 2025, covering over 1.70 lakh post offices in India.
