On May 27, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), Government of India (GoI), approved 3 new high-yielding crop varieties and expanded the cultivation areas for three existing varieties developed by Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV), Akola (Maharashtra), to boost agricultural productivity and sustainability across India.

  • (i) The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) has approved three new crop varieties developed by Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV). These include AKAW 5100 Wheat, which is rust-resistant and drought-tolerant for regions like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu; CSV 65 Yellow Sorghum, a bio-fortified kharif variety rich in zinc and iron; and Super Jaki Chickpea (AKG 1402), a high-yielding, early-maturing, machine-harvestable variety for rainfed Maharashtra.
  • (ii) The ministry also approved expanding cultivation areas for three existing varieties.
