In May 2025, the Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Rajasthan’s traditional ‘Sangri’ bean in the agricultural products category. Sangri is a slender bean known for its unique flavor and is a staple ingredient in Rajasthani cuisine.

  • - Sangri grows on the Khejri tree (scientific name: Prosopis cineraria), often called the "Wonder of the Thar Desert" due to its ability to thrive in the harsh desert environment. The Khejri tree is also the official state tree of Rajasthan.
  • - Traditionally, Sangri is used in a famous Rajasthani dish called 'Kher Sangri,' which is a tangy and aromatic preparation made by slow-cooking dried Sangri beans with regional spices and curd, showcasing the distinct flavors of Rajasthan.
  • - This bean is mainly found in the western arid regions of Rajasthan, especially in districts like Jaisalmer and Barmer, where the desert climate suits its growth.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The application for the GI tag was filed in January 2025 by Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University (SKRAU) in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The university requested the GI certification for Khejri Sangri, highlighting its regional importance.
  • (ii) As background, Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to receive a GI tag. Among Indian states, Uttar Pradesh currently holds the highest number of GI tags, totaling 77 products as of May 2025.
  • (iii) The GI tag recognizes that a product has a specific geographical origin and possesses qualities or reputation linked to that location. Administered under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, the GI registration provides legal protection for ten years and can be renewed indefinitely in ten-year increments to prevent unauthorized use of the product name.
