According to SIDBI Report MSME Share in Merchandise Exports Rises to 45.7% in FY24.

In May 2025, the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) released a report titled "Understanding the Indian MSME Sector: Progress and Challenges", offering comprehensive insights into India’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. The findings are based on a survey of 2,097 MSMEs across 19 sectors including manufacturing, services, and trading.

  • - The report highlights that registrations on the Udyam Registration Portal (URP) have significantly increased to over 6.2 crore by March 2025, a sharp rise from 2.5 crore in March 2024.
  • - This surge reflects a major step towards formalization within the sector.
  • - MSMEs currently contribute nearly 30% to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provide employment to over 11 crore individuals, making their empowerment vital for sustainable and long-term economic development.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) MSMEs’ share in India’s merchandise exports grew from 43.59% in FY23 to 45.73% in FY24 and further to 45.79% in FY25.
  • (ii) The Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE 2023–24) reported an increase in female-owned enterprises from 22.9% in 2022–23 to 26.2% in 2023–24.
  • (iii) This rise indicates a positive trend in women’s participation in entrepreneurship across India.
