MoSPI: Monthly per capita expenditure rose by 9% in rural areas and approximately 8% in urban areas in 2023-24.

In December 2024, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) released the results of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey: 2023-24 (HCES: 2023-24). According to the survey, the average Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) in rural and urban India was estimated to be Rs 4,122 and Rs 6,996, respectively, in 2023-24. This is based on actual spending and does not include the value of items received for free through social welfare programs.

  • - The average MPCE (excluding imputation) in nominal terms has increased by around 8% in urban areas and 9% in rural areas in 2023-24, compared to the previous year (2022-23).

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The urban-rural gap in MPCE has decreased from 84% in 2011-12 to 71% in 2022-23 and further to 70% in 2023-24, showing that consumption growth in rural areas has been steadily increasing.
  • (ii) Sikkim reported the highest MPCE among all states, with Rs 9,377 in rural areas and Rs 13,927 in urban areas for 2023-24.
  • (iii) Chhattisgarh recorded the lowest MPCE, with Rs 2,739 in rural areas and Rs 4,927 in urban areas for 2023-24.
