First BRIC Foundation Day Celebrated with the Launch of 'One Day One Genome.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC) under the Ministry of Science & Technology (MoS&T) launched the 'One Day One Genome' initiative to showcase India's vast microbial potential.

  • - The launch was announced by Amitabh Kant, India's G-20 Sherpa and Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, on the 1st Foundation Day of BRIC on November 9, 2024, at the National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi.

  • (i) The initiative, coordinated by West Bengal-based BRIC-National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (BRIC-NIBMG), an institute of the Department of Biotechnology, aims to release a fully annotated bacteriological genome isolated in India.
  • (ii) The initiative highlights the unique bacterial species found in the country and emphasizes their critical roles in the environment, agriculture, and human health.
