💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The term ‘photography’, meaning ‘drawing with light’, was first coined in 1839 by British scientist Sir John Herschel. That same year, the invention of the daguerreotype was officially announced by the French Academy of Sciences.
  • (ii) In 2009, the idea of observing World Photography Day annually was formally proposed to honor the art and science of photography. The first official global observance was held on 19th August 2010.
  • (iii) For 2025, a two-week long World Photography Week will be held from 12th to 26th August 2025, engaging photographers, institutions, and enthusiasts in exhibitions, campaigns, and educational programs worldwide.
