Union Minister Amit Shah Unveils ‘Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag’ to Promote Use of Indian Languages in Governance.

In June 2025, Union Minister Amit Shah, heading the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Cooperation (MoC), launched the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag (BBA) or Indian Languages Section under the Department of Official Language, MHA, in New Delhi, Delhi.

  • - This initiative is designed to reduce reliance on foreign languages, particularly English, in administrative work and aims to empower governance by encouraging decision-making in regional and mother tongues.
  • - It also strengthens India's linguistic diversity by actively integrating all 22 Scheduled Languages into official functions and policy implementation.
  • - The Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag (BBA) collaborates with the Pune (Maharashtra)-based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), to implement a universal translation system. This AI-driven system will facilitate real-time translation of documents and correspondence between the Centre and State Governments, enabling seamless communication while preserving linguistic and cultural nuances.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Under the Official Language Rules, 1976, English is currently mandated for official communication between the Central Government and Region C states (such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka) where Hindi is not widely spoken.
  • (ii) With the launch of the Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag (BBA), officials across ministries can now use their mother tongue for file work, communication, and decision-making, with translations efficiently managed through the C-DAC platform.
  • (iii) The Government of India (GoI) has allocated ₹56 crore for the development of this platform under the Union Budget 2024–25.
