Adani Group Unveils India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Mining Truck in Chhattisgarh.

In May 2025, Ahmedabad (Gujarat)-based Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), the flagship company of the Adani Group, launched India’s first hydrogen-powered fuel cell truck designed for mining logistics. The truck was unveiled in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, as part of the company’s push towards cleaner transportation and to replace traditional diesel vehicles in its logistics operations.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The hydrogen-powered truck was flagged off by Vishnu Deo Sai, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. It will be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block in Raigarh district to a state-run power plant in Chhattisgarh, supporting more sustainable mining and energy processes.
  • - Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL), the state-owned power producer, appointed AEL as the mine developer and operator for the Gare Pelma III block. This appointment was made through a competitive bidding process, highlighting AEL’s growing role in the region’s mining sector.
  • - Each truck is equipped with advanced smart technology and three hydrogen tanks. These trucks can carry up to 40 tonnes (t) of cargo and operate efficiently over a distance of 200 kilometres (km). The fuel system includes a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack, which enables clean and efficient energy conversion.

  • (i) The development of these hydrogen fuel cell battery-operated trucks is a result of collaboration between AEL and leading Indian and international energy technology firms, along with a major automobile manufacturer. This partnership brings together cutting-edge technology and expertise to support India’s green energy goals.
  • (ii) The project is managed by Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), both subsidiaries of AEL. ANR sources the hydrogen fuel cells from ANIL, which specializes in green hydrogen production, solar modules, wind turbines, and battery manufacturing, ensuring a sustainable supply chain.
  • (iii) Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles produce only water vapour and warm air as emissions, drastically reducing air pollution and noise compared to diesel trucks. This initiative aligns with India’s national target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and reduce dependency on crude oil imports, marking a significant step towards cleaner industrial transport.
