RGI Released Three Reports CRS, SRS and MCCD 2021 as Life Expectancy in India Drops.

The Registrar General of India (RGI), under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), released three reports for 2021: the Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report 2021, the Vital Statistics of India Based on the Civil Registration System (CRS) 2021, and the Report on Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) 2021.

  • - CRS is the record of all registered births and deaths in India.
  • - SRS is a survey-based estimate of births and deaths and aims to capture unregistered events as well, serving as a crucial complement to the CRS data.
  • - The MCCD includes a subset of CRS-recorded deaths where the cause of death is medically certified.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) According to the 2021 Sample Registration System (SRS) report, the Crude Death Rate (CDR)—which indicates the number of deaths per 1,000 people—increased to 7.5, making 2021 the deadliest year of the Covid-19 pandemic. This marks a significant rise compared to previous years, reflecting the pandemic's severe toll on population health.
  • (ii) The Civil Registration System (CRS), which accounts only for registered deaths, also recorded a notable surge with nearly 2 million additional deaths reported in 2021. Meanwhile, the Medical Certification of Cause of Death (MCCD) report documented 4,13,580 Covid-19 deaths in 2021, compared to 1,60,618 in 2020, further underlining the pandemic’s impact.
  • (iii) In terms of life expectancy, the SRS data revealed that life expectancy at birth stood at 69.8 years during the 2017–2021 period, showing a decline from the 2016–2020 estimates. Urban areas witnessed a sharper drop of 0.3 years, while rural regions experienced a smaller decline of 0.1 years, indicating a broader national impact on longevity during the pandemic.
