AGEL Becomes First Global Renewable Energy IPP to Achieve Water Positive Status.

On May 8, 2025, Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and a joint venture between Adani Group and TotalEnergies (France), became the world’s first Renewable Energy (RE) Independent Power Producer (IPP) to achieve water positive status with a 14 GW operational portfolio—one year ahead of its target (FY 2025–26).

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - AGEL’s achievement was certified by Intertek, a London-based global assurance firm, after conducting thorough audits and assessments across 103 operational sites and 85 water conservation locations. This certification makes AGEL the only RE company in India of its scale to be recognized as water positive.
  • - Among the top 10 global RE portfolio companies, AGEL is the first and only to achieve water positivity. This milestone demonstrates its global leadership in sustainability and environmental responsibility.
  • - AGEL’s efforts revitalized 85 ponds, providing direct benefits to over 1,23,000 people, particularly in water-scarce communities, enhancing both access to water and local sustainability.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Over 54% of AGEL’s operational solar capacity uses robotic cleaning for solar modules, which helps save approximately 546 million litres of water annually, a key step toward resource conservation in renewable energy operations.
  • (ii) AGEL has implemented advanced solutions like waterless robotic cleaning, deepening traditional water bodies, rainwater harvesting, and pilot projects for producing clean drinking water from humid air, all contributing to sustainable development goals.
  • (iii) Water positivity means returning more freshwater to the environment than is consumed during operations. The concept emphasizes preservation, optimization, and restoration of water resources. AGEL’s portfolio is also certified single-use plastic free and zero waste-to-landfill, reinforcing its eco-conscious operations.
