ISRO Sends Crew Module for Gaganyaan's First Uncrewed Mission.

In January 2025, the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) of ISRO, based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, dispatched the Crew Module for Gaganyaan's first uncrewed mission (G1) to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The module's integration with the liquid propulsion system has been successfully completed.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The CMPS is a bi-propellant Reaction Control System (RCS) designed for precise three-axis control—Pitch, Yaw, and Roll—of the crew module. This control is activated during the descent and re-entry phase after the separation of the Service Module, ensuring stability until the parachute-based deceleration system is deployed.
  • - The CMPS is equipped with 12 thrusters, each generating 100N (Newton) of thrust. These small rocket motors are integral to spacecraft propulsion and are supported by a propellant feed mechanism and high-pressure gas bottles for efficient operation.
  • - The CMUS, designed by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), has also been incorporated into the Crew Module. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the module's orientation and stability during various phases of the mission.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The Crew Module will undergo further integration activities at VSSC, including the assembly of the avionics package, electrical harnessing, and extensive testing. Following these operations, it will be transferred to the U R Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru for the final step of Orbital Module integration.
  • (ii) Gaganyaan is ISRO's ambitious crewed spacecraft project, aiming to launch astronauts into space by 2026. Once successful, India will join the ranks of Russia, the United States, and China as the fourth nation to achieve human spaceflight capabilities.
  • (iii) The Gaganyaan spacecraft comprises two key components: the Crew Module (CM), designed to house astronauts, and the Service Module (SM), which contains essential systems for propulsion and support. Together, they form the Orbital Module, vital for the mission's success. The Gaganyaan program highlights India's advancements in space technology, aiming to establish a strong foundation for future human space exploration while positioning India as a global leader in space endeavors.
