NTPC has partnered with Sri Lanka for a significant solar project.

In January 2025, NTPC Limited (based in New Delhi, formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation) partnered with the Ceylon Electricity Board of Sri Lanka to develop a 50 Megawatt (MW) solar project in Sampoor, Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. This project can be expanded to 120 MW.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The solar facility in Sampoor will be set up by Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a joint venture (JV) between NTPC Limited and the Ceylon Electricity Board.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) After discussions with various stakeholders in Sri Lanka, the tariff for the project has been set at 5.97 US cents per unit.
  • (ii)This solar project will help diversify Sri Lanka’s energy mix, increasing its clean energy capacity and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  • (iii) With this project, NTPC, India’s top power generation company under the Ministry of Power (MoP), is taking a big step towards promoting sustainable energy and strengthening regional cooperation.
