On January 9, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) launched India's first-ever survey on the "My Gov" portal to assess the edible oil consumption patterns across the country.

  • - This initiative is designed to support the implementation of the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds), aiming to improve the oilseeds sector and reduce the country's dependency on imports.
  • - The survey seeks to fill the gap in recent data regarding edible oil consumption, as India is the world's largest consumer and importer of edible oils.
  • - The questionnaire-based survey began on January 9, 2025, and will run until February 23, 2025.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Industry reports indicate that India's per capita annual consumption (PCAC) of edible oil has surpassed 20 kg, exceeding the recommended limits of 12 kg by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and 13 kg by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • (ii) Currently, India imports 55-60% of its edible oil requirements from countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Russia, and Ukraine.
  • (iii) During the 2023-24 oil marketing year, India's total edible oil imports amounted to approximately 15.96 million tonnes (MT).
