In January 2025, Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), launched the toolkit for the 9th edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS), the world's largest urban cleanliness survey, in a new version that is simpler, sharper, systematic, and all-inclusive.

  • - A special category, Super Swachh League (SSL), has been introduced for 2024 to create a separate league for cities excelling in cleanliness.
  • - SS(Swachh Survekshan), initially launched by MoHUA in 2016, aims to improve urban sanitation through citizen participation and third-party validation.

  • (i) Cities have been classified into five population categories: Very Small, Small, Medium, Big, and Medium-Plus.
  • (ii) Each category will be evaluated based on population and parameters tailored to its specific size and needs.
  • (iii) The final phase of SS—the Field Assessment for the 9th edition—will begin on February 15, 2025, and conclude by the end of March 2025.
