Ministry of Defence Signs Rs 1207.5 Crore Contract with CSL for INS Vikramaditya Refitting.

On November 30, 2024, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a Rs 1207.5 crore contract with Kochi-based Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the Short Refit and Dry Docking (SRDD) of INS Vikramaditya, the flagship aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy (IN).

  • - The contract will span 5 months and is crucial in enhancing India's naval capabilities, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives to promote self-reliance and boost domestic manufacturing in the maritime sector.
  • - INS Vikramaditya, a 45,000-tonne aircraft carrier originally acquired from Russia, has been in active service since 2013, safeguarding India’s interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
  • - The SRDD will include key upgrades such as enhancing combat systems, overhauling operational equipment, and strengthening support mechanisms to improve overall functionality and operational readiness.
