On January 10, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) announced the successful completion of user trials for its HIMKAVACH multi-layer clothing system in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • - The HIMKAVACH multi-layer clothing system aims to enhance soldier performance by improving mobility, comfort, and durability in extreme cold environments.
  • - Designed to protect soldiers in temperatures ranging from +20°C to -60°C, it is especially suitable for high-altitude military operations, particularly in the Himalayan region.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The system features a modular, multi-layer structure, enabling soldiers to add or remove layers according to weather conditions, ensuring optimal comfort and mobility.
  • (ii) Previously, the Indian Army (IA) utilized the Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS), a 3-layered outfit developed by DRDO's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS). This system offered insulation, waterproofing, and a reversible outer layer for camouflage in both snowy and non-snowy terrains.
