Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), also known as Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Day, is celebrated every two years on January 9. It is an important event that recognizes the contributions of the Overseas Indian community (Indian diaspora) in India's development.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - PBD has been observed every year on January 9 since 2003 to mark the day in 1915 when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, returned to India from South Africa to lead the country’s freedom struggle.
  • - From 2015 onwards, the PBD Convention has been held every two years with theme-based conferences.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The PBD Convention, a key event organized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was first introduced in 2003 by the Government of India (GoI), led by the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It aims to honor and connect with the Indian diaspora.
  • (ii) The 18th PBD Convention took place for the first time in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from January 8 to 10, 2025.
  • (iii) The theme for PBD Convention 2025 was "Diaspora's Contribution to a Viksit Bharat" (Developed India).
