On January 5, 2025, the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for All (UJALA) scheme, a transformative initiative by the Government of India (GoI) in energy efficiency, and the Street Lighting National Programme (SNLP) celebrated 10 years of successful implementation.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - Both programmes were launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on January 5, 2015.
  • - The schemes are being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Ministry of Power (MoP).
  • - It was initially launched as the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) and later renamed UJALA, with the goal of delivering affordable, energy-efficient LED bulbs, tube lights, and fans to millions of households across India.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) By January 6, 2025, the scheme has distributed 36.87 crore LED bulbs, leading to annual electricity savings worth Rs 19,153 crore.
  • (ii) As of January 6, 2025, over 1.34 crore LED streetlights have been installed across Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and Gram Panchayats (GPs) under the SNLP programme.
  • (iii) Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) is a joint venture of four power sector PSUs: NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation Limited, REC Limited, and POWERGRID Corporation of India Limited.
