Indore's Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport Becomes India's First Zero-Waste Airport.

Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport in Indore, Madhya Pradesh (MP), has recently become India's first zero-waste airport with the inauguration of a 3,000-square-foot (sq. ft) Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at the airport by Union Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA).

  • - The airport's zero-waste milestone is achieved through the 4R strategy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Restore.
  • - The Zero-Waste Airport Project is a collaborative effort between IndiGo's corporate social responsibility arm, IndiGoReach, the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and the AAS Foundation, a non-governmental organization promoting sustainable development.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The MRF incorporates a comprehensive waste management system to segregate and process all wet and dry waste generated by both the airport and aircraft on-site.
  • (ii) The facility can process approximately 750 kilograms of waste daily from airport operations and flights.
  • (iii) Alongside the MRF, a new air traffic control tower, constructed at a cost of Rs 55 crore, was also inaugurated.
