In January 2025, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, holding portfolios in the Ministry of Railways (MoR), Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), and Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), along with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, jointly inaugurated the 'National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology' (NIELIT) Deemed University.

  • - The event took place in Guwahati, Assam, and marked the establishment of NIELIT at 12 locations, including five in the North Eastern States.
  • - Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the development of a new NIELIT campus in Jagiroad, Assam, with a focus on semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Established in 1994, NIELIT is the only university under MeitY, dedicated to advancing education and research in Electronics and Information Technology (IT).
  • (ii) During the event, NIELIT and Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL), based in Bangalore, Karnataka, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the semiconductor skill development ecosystem in India.
