Mission MAUSAM, a visionary initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), aims to establish India as a global leader in weather and climate sciences. The program is designed to make India "Weather Ready" and "Climate Smart" by 2026, aligning with international standards.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Mission MAUSAM in September 2024, allocating a total budget of Rs 2,000 crore for a duration of two years.
  • - Mission MAUSAM is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing India's capabilities in weather and climate-related sciences and services.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) Key Target: The mission aims to establish advanced infrastructure, including 50 Doppler Weather Radars (DWR), 60 Radio Sonde/Radio Wind (RS/RW) stations, 100 disdrometers, 10 Wind Profilers, 25 radiometers, 1 urban test-bed, 1 process test-bed, 1 ocean research station, and 10 marine automatic weather stations equipped for upper air observation.
  • (ii) The Mission MAUSAM is being implemented by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) through its three premier institutions: the India Meteorological Department (IMD) based in New Delhi (Delhi), the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) located in Noida (Uttar Pradesh), and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune (Maharashtra).
  • (iii) Additionally, the mission is supported by allied bodies of MoES, including the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad (Telangana) and the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in Chennai (Tamil Nadu).
