ISRO has successfully launched the PSLV-C60 mission, named SpaDeX, for a space docking experiment.

On December 30, 2024, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)-C60 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh (AP). The mission, called Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), is designed to demonstrate the ability to dock two small spacecraft, SDX01 and SDX02, in space.

  • - If successful, India will become the 4th country in the world to have space docking technology, following Russia (the former USSR), the United States (USA), and China.
  • - The PSLV-C60 mission was ISRO's 99th launch, and the final docking will take place by January 7, 2025, after completing several operations.

  • (i) Spacecraft Docking and Undocking' s The main goal is to successfully dock two spacecraft, SDX01 (the Chaser) and SDX02 (the Target), in space. The process will involve a controlled approach, bringing the spacecraft from a distance of 20 km to just 3 meters before they dock.
  • (ii) The docking will be carried out using precise maneuvers, which will be coordinated by ISRO's ISTRAC (ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network) in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • (iii) Once the spacecraft are docked, they will transfer power between each other. Afterward, they will undock and continue their individual operations, which will last for up to 2 years.
