INCOIS has launched a new version of SARAT to enhance sea rescue operations.

In December 2024, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), developed an updated version of its Search and Rescue Aid Tool (SARAT). This tool is designed to assist in sea rescue operations to locate missing persons or vessels.

🎯 Key Highlights:

  • - The Earth System Science Organization's Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (ESSO-INCOIS) first developed SARAT in 2016, based on the LEEWAY model, to support Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in the Indian Ocean region.
  • - SARAT improves rescue operations and is available online through the SARAT Portal.

💡 Other Important Facts:

  • (i) The tool accurately locates a missing person or object using a model that accounts for uncertainties in the initial location and last known time of the object.
  • (ii) The movement of lost objects is mostly influenced by winds and currents. SARAT uses model currents from the high-resolution Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS), which runs on High Performance Computers at INCOIS.
  • (iii) Based on the object's shape and buoyancy, the user can choose from up to 60 different types of missing objects to help with the search.
